Sinks with garbage disposals are very helpful because they allow you to quickly shred and dispose of your food remains. However garbage disposals just like all household appliances require frequent cleaning in order to work properly. Even more if the cleaning of the garbage disposal is neglected it will begin to emit a nasty odor that will poison the entire ambience of your home. If you have never cleaned your garbage disposal before here is want you should do.
The easiest way to prevent the appearance of a nasty odor is to clean your disposal on a daily basis. You can do that by turning on the disposal and running a thick stream of hot water through your garbage disposal for a period of 40 seconds to one minute. Then turn off the disposal and block your sink with your sink rubber stop. Fill your sink with hot water and add several drops of grease-cutting dish washing liquid to the water. Now remove the rubber stopper and turn on your garbage disposal. Once the water is drained from your sink, stop the disposal and clean the rubber flaps with a nylon brush. End the cleaning by running water through the garbage disposal for another 30 seconds.
If despite all your efforts your garbage disposal starts to emit a nasty odor, remove the scent by lifting the rubber flaps and pouring onto the disposal ½ cup of baking soda. The baking soda should cover the entire drain, if the drain is not covered, add more baking soda. Now pour ½ cup of vinegar down the garbage disposal drain. Vinegar is a natural deodorant so it should eliminate the nasty odor. Allow the baking soda and vinegar to sit for an hour and then clean the disposal by running cold water through it for a period of 40 seconds.
Also every now and then hire a professional company that provides junk removal to come and conduct a check-up of your garbage disposal, dispose of any residual junk and of course execute a deep cleaning of your disposal. You can find the contact details of such a company in the junk removal section of the yellow pages and local newspapers.
As you can see the maintenance of the garbage disposal isn’t as time consuming as you may think. So don’t neglect your duties and clean your disposal on a regular basis in order to avoid nasty smells.
